It is free. I have used it before. The only thing, it brings up advertisement to Buy Avira whenever it updates. It is pretty large but you can quit out of it. According to Antivirus tests, Avira is better than AVG.

YES it is free.The license antivirus will last for 5 months then every 5 months it will updated the license for 5 months life. you can see the validity of the license on the antivirus window (PersonalEdition Classic License, valid 11/30/2998 %26lt;- this is the latest license).

I prefer avira then avg. for me it is better and can detect most of the virus.

However, if you choose to install it I advise you to keep an eye on your auto-updates. I've tried Avira several times over the last few years and it has always given me auto-update issues. (Which is why I use and recommend Avast.)
