Do I need spyware, IPS and a firewall to get the best protection when I just have AVG anti virus? What do each of these things do? Will these things slow my computer down? What product would you recommend for each of the four things?

Spyware:
Superantispyware is well known to find spyware that all other miss. Plus you really need to run atleast three antispyware, as one will find what is missed by the others.

You can only use one antivirus or you will have serious conflict with your system.
Firewall:
ZoneAlarm, free for home personal use. You get all new versions free and auto updates. http://www.zonealarm.com
All of the above is uses very little resources and will not slow down your pc.
You need all of these to protect your pc. Plus make sure all of your Windows critical updates are upto date.
