Computer protection?

i know this sounds like a dumb question, but other than anti-virus and anti-spyware, what else should i use to protect my computer?

Computer protection?pop up blocker

I'm kind of picky when it comes to keeping my pc in top shape...

so I use a lot of cleaning programs, all free. heres a couple links.

ccleaner:http://www.ccleaner.com/

revo uninstaller:http://www.revouninstaller.com/

Eusing free registry cleaner: http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_clea...

Spybot Search and destory:http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index...

cheers.

oh, and I have vista.. if you have vista too, I would recomend going to this link, its a good place to start turning off unneeded services. just click the "reg" link next to the setup of your choice.

As stated above, firefox offers much greater protection against online threats than internet explorer. In addition it's free and is better than internet explorer to use anyway.

Computer Protection/Antiviruses?

Can anyone help or make reccommend suggestions about anti-virus software or spyware, etc. (I know very little about technology!) I know I had the AVG free trial but it expired. I don't necessarily mind paying for a service, as long as it is reputable.

I currently have some kind of bug, trojan, or virus (just throwing words out there!) that prohibits me from using search engines online. Whenever I click on a link that comes up as a result, I am automatically transferred to another "phishy" looking search site or ebay site.

Can anyone offer advice, tips, or empathy? I would appreciate it! Being a college student, it's frustrating not to be able to use search engines (like when I have a 20 page paper due Monday!) ;)

Thanks all!

I have active virus shield. It's free and works well. You can download it on line.

Computer Protection/Antiviruses?triumph

i think u should try Kaspersky anti-virus its like the first or the second best anti-virus program.

but u know what.. the best way to get rid of viruses is to format your hard drive. then install the windows and all the stuff again and an anti-virus software to prevent from getting viruses in the future. coz what i know that when u get a virus and it messes up your computer, some of it stays there, or it goes away with an anti-virus but its effect stays. with formatting u get a clean new computer.
I use NOD32 as antivirus, AVG Antispyware and ZoneAlarm as firewall. I fully recommend them all, but there must be other good programs.

What is the best overall protection out there?

In your opinon, or of many others. What are the best anti mal ware to buy? Is it better to buy a certain security suite, or a separate Anti Virus and Anti Spyware? If so, which ones? Also, my last question is about a Trojan Horse, if you have any knowledge on that besides Re installing my OS, please answer it.

I have bought all sorts of programs over the years but I have to say the free AVG %26#123;along with Spybot %26 Adaware%26#125; are the best and easiest to use.

If you don't do the updates on these programs than there is no use having them at all.

Unfortunately many people don't understand the purpose of the updates so skip this step to their detrement!

Think of the programs as a dictionary and the updates add new words to the dictionary daily; what good would a dictionary be if the words you are looking for are not in it?

On the preventive side, one of the best sites to test your system and get advice is Gibson Research, everyone should run a Shields Up! on their system to find out if their computer is inviting attacks by hackers by answering "ping requests" thereby providing hackers with a gps map to your system!

How do I transfer my Norton Protection to another computer...if I extended it online?

I recently extended my norton anti-virus for my laptop online but am also in the process of buying a new pc. Is it possible to transfer the norton service to my new pc and keep it on the laptop as well? If so, how? I don't really want to have to spend another 拢30 on anti-virus software for the new computer if I can use the service I've already paid for.

Any help please?

How do I transfer my Norton Protection to another computer...if I extended it online?spyware remove

What you should have done were to buy Nortons Bundle package (that covers 3 computers) but since you did not do that then only your laptop will be covered. Now if you buy a New Computer, it will come with an antivirus program all ready install for a number of months, and before the time expires you can buy the bundle package. And the price is not that much difference (between the single and the bundle) and both of your computers will be covered for a year (from one software)

What offers most protection for all forms of undesired programs?

I'm already using an AVG Professional Edtion 7.5 but recently my cousin told me that she encountered a trojan virus from her flash drive that I used. I always take time to update my Anti-Virus but I doubt it's enough.

There is no silver bullet when it comes to anti-virus software. Your best bet is to run two at a time. Keep them updated and scan once a week.

Brandon

What offers most protection for all forms of undesired programs?virus removal

AVG AV is a very poor AV its detection rate is only 82% - with this poor detection rate I just would not use AVG - Avast %26 Avira are both free %26 have a far better detection rate.

Don't run two AV's it will lock up your PC, you can do a free online scan to see if AVG is missing Viruses - try bitdefender free online scan or trend housecall.

Is recommended to have additional spyware protection with Norton Antivirus 2008?

For example, in the past it was strongly recommended to have a dedicated anti-spyware program (such as spysweeper) along with a dedicated anti-virus program. Given my situation, I have both Norton AV 2008 and the recent Webroot Spysweeper on my Vista box. Would it be wise to dump the Spysweeper program and just trust Norton's "anti-spyware" claims? I understand both programs are resource hogs. (can't live with them, can't live without them)

P.S., I understand some people don鈥檛 like either or. Please refrain from a full out product war debate.

Is recommended to have additional spyware protection with Norton Antivirus 2008?spyware

Keep Spysweeper! Spyware/Adware is much more prevalent than true "viruses" and Spysweeper is a very good program. Forget about Adaware as mentioned by another person (it's crap), Spysweeper is much better. Yes, they are resource hogs unfortunately (especially Norton), but you paid for them so you might as well keep 'em. I would suggest a secondary spyware scanner as a backup. Try SuperAntispyware Free Edition. It is an on-demand scanner so you won't have to worry about it hogging any resources when you are not scanning. Trust me, I do this for a living!

EDIT: The guy below me has got to be bored following up and adding negative spin to all my answers. It's actually kind of cute! Wish he had more credibility!

Conspiracy of ADDS, POP-UPS, Virusesss, SPYWARE?

It seems that every few months a new add-ware spy-ware program is in the market because they know of new viruses out there. Surfer the net has become, like driving in the streets and watching all the signs. We cant surf the net as we used to because advertising and other things are consuming every aspect of the internet. I for example use Firefox with the option of telling me which cookies are being set automatically into my session viewing. If i dont do that even with anti-virus and spyware protection something slips. So the fact is. Either we are just being fooled or everything is going to be out of control. I think the net is getting to the point where we have to ask for something as similar as the TELEMARKETING act of putting your name into a no call list. Not even that. In the beginning we we could pay for a anti-virus and be protectected now we are kind of forced to pay one year renewel fees to get the most recent upadate or we are just going to be exposed. So what do we DOOOOO

Conspiracy of ADDS, POP-UPS, Virusesss, SPYWARE?stinger

I genuinely believe that viruses and spyware are created by a third party on the instructions of the virus software companies so they sell more of their programmes.

A massive market.

Protection for my Macbook?

Ok so i dont download music but i do have some downloaded music on my itunes from awhile ago. So is it nessasary to get any sort of anti virus, spyware, or a firewall for my new macbook?

Protection for my Macbook?suzuki

Dude, you have a MACbook, not a windows computer!! Macbooks come with a firewall, so all you have to do is turn it on. Check out Apple's support pages for more info. Also, there is a free firewall at www.clamxav.com which is for mac's.

Protection for my Macbook?virus

Hello. You can turn your firewall that is already embeded inside your Mac on by going to System Preferences and then go to the Sharing area and turn the firewall on. And also for spyware, you can get MacScan and also ClamXav for viruses, although I doubt there are any. I also have a Mac too. Congrats for getting one. :)
lol no. idk if u know but macs are basically imune to any viruses and such. you dont have to worry about getting a virus on a mac, trust me. check out the website if u dont belive me
most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser.

you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus. i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar.

firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser.

as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.

besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE. download firefox for free, Just have a try:

Question for Linux Users?

Do you still need anti-virus and spyware protection with Linux?

If so, where can I obtain Anti-virus, anti-spyware, and a firewall?

What programs would you recommend to download for Linux?

I have Ubuntu 6.06 LST if that helps at all. Thanks for any help you give in advance and God bless.

Question for Linux Users?symantic

Well there aren't MANY viruses that affect linux but there are some.

So yes I think you still need one, just an opinion.

I run clam on all our servers and it cleans a ton of stuff out.

Its free and will work great on ubuntu (at least the last time I checked it). It is easy to use. There was some talk about one being included in the Distro but dont know if they have done that as yet.. guess I should go over and take a look.

http://www.clamav.net is the address for clam.

Enjoy, I do like linux.

Question for Linux Users?viruses

"Do you still need anti-virus and spyware protection with Linux?" :No. If you go with the default install, the firewall/ SELinux will be good enough. Be sure not to enable any services.

"What programs would you recommend to download for Linux?": I suggest that you also disable sendmail, adjust SELinux policy to not allow writing, limit HTTPD access, and turn off any other extra services.

Cpmputer protection good enough?

I have

-Norton Internet Security 2007

-Spybot Search and Destory

-Ad-Adware SE

-Avast Anti Virus

is that good enough? need a fire wall anything? please tell me where to get it and stuff If I DO need it.

Cpmputer protection good enough?symatec

Firewall is most important. Zone Alarm free version does the job. I think Windows firewall only guards against stuff coming in, not stuff being sent from your pc, so get Zone Alarm. I'd get one more anti-spyware as well, say AVG or superantispyware.

Cpmputer protection good enough?vista

well heres one thing noriton doesnt want you to know. if you get a pop up from it saying something is trying to access a server or something else. block it. it has massive spyware problems and could get your information. to be extra safe turn on your firewall.
If you are using the Anti-virus with NIS2007 alongside Avast, that could cause a lot of problems. See below with a reference link to Norton.

Only use one anti-virus product. Running more than one can cause conflicts thus rendering each ineffective. Same goes for firewalls

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/nav...

You can install a few extras such as SpywareBlaster which blocks spyware before it even installs and uses no resources.

Best Free Anti-Virus Software Updated November 28, 2007

If you are looking for the best possible protection my top recommendation is Avira AntiVir Personal Edition Classic [1]. Although its detection rate is outstanding there are some reservations. First it lacks email scanning; this is only available in the paid version. That means that AntiVir won't warn you about any infected emails before you open them. However should you open an infected email then AntiVir will still spring into action, so not having an email scanner doesn't mean you are not protected from email based infections. My second reservation is that AntiVir is quite an intrusive product - you will certainly be well aware of its presence. Finally AntiVir Personal Edition Classic has a time limited license. It is renewable but be aware you will have to periodically go through the hoops.

Webroot AntiVirus With AntiSpyware %26 Firewall, formally known as Webroot's Spysweeper with Anti-virus is the way to go.

The best software you should get is Webroot AntiVirus With AntiSpyware %26 Firewall, this software is too good and gets better everyday. This is ELITE software. It blocks over 510,000 definition threats, which contain multiple fringerprints with each(you can do the math). No other software can compete with that or come close for that matter. It catches everything: viruses, spyware, adware, malware, root kits, keyloggers, trojans, worms, and anything else. It also has active shields and a Firewall that learns from your useage. I've used them all and it is 2nd to none.

Don't waste your time with AVG, true sword, spybot, ad aware, CA, spyhunter, mcafee, superantispyware, avast, panda, kaspersky, spyware blaster, spyware guard, windows defender or anything of the sort. Stay away from anything that is FREE when it comes to spyware and antivirus. There is a reason why they are free. They are NOT good. I even guaranDAMNtee my answers and will help through IM if needed.

Mobile Phone Protection?

Where can I download for free a mobile anti-virus. my phone is Sonny Ericsson K750i

Mobile Phone Protection?virus protection

You cannot. The Sony Ericsson K750i is not a Symbian phone - it runs a proprietary operating system. There are neither viruses, nor anti-virus programs for it.

Besides, even if it were a Symbian phone, the good general-purpose anti-virus programs for such phones are not free; you can find only free utilities for removing some particular virus (usually Cabir or CommWarrior).

Sure. Buy the product (Norton Antivirus) in a store or online. Then uninstall your trial version and then install the purchased one. (I only say that because I don't know if the retail version can be installed on top of the trial version.

Which anti-viruses/spyware ect. are best?antivirus download

After extensively researching all anti-virus products I can say the best anti-virus is Kaspersky, though NOD32 is better for computer experts. Kaspersky is the best all-round anti-virus program. NOD32 runs faster and has less software conflicts but as a consequence the user interface is difficult to use.

The most popular free anti-virus programs (AVG and Avast) have poor detection rates (82.82%, 87.46% respectively). Norton is notoriously bloated and takes forever to perform full systems scans.

It has been proven ESET NOD32 and Kaspersky are better than the best sellers Norton and McAfee (see the consumersearch source for reviews of the top anti-virus products). See recent tests for yourself at av-comparatives.org.

Is free Internet protection safe?

I recently signed up with virgin media for their broadband deal, which included in the price was free internet security (firewall , anti-virus, pop-up blocker and privacy manager) my question is it safe to just use the free internet safety or should I go out and buy my own e.g nortan internet security or Mcafee

Is free Internet protection safe?

It's safe enough, Norton and McAfee are not worth the CD they come on. If you decide to buy and anti-virus get Kaspersky or NOD32.

The best anti-virus is ESET NOD32 then Kaspersky. NOD32 is the only anti-virus that got an Advanced+ rating in tests conducted at http://www.av-comparatives.org/

The most popular free anti-virus programs (AVG and Avast) have poor detection rates (82.82%, 87.46% respectively). Norton is notoriously bloated and takes forever to perform full systems scans.

I only recommend buying NOD32 (advanced users) or Kaspersky. It has been proven these products are better than the best sellers (Norton and McAfee):

Yes, it is safe, no it is not free you are paying for it , it is including your package you pay every month. I have com cast and I pay monthly for the service and all that protection software included.
It really depends on what they supplied you with. Some free ones are good, and some are crap. I would look for reviews on the software they gave you, and then decide.
i think all are not safe.......COZ EVERY TIME A SECURITY PROGRAMS UPGRADE . ALSO THE HACKERS ARE UPGRADING THIER KNOWLEDGE ON HOW TO HACK

.... but if there is an error you cn call your SERVICE PROVIDER .... COZ THIER SERVICE is what you've PAID FOR...............................
No its not safe!

I would install a free antivirus like AVG or Avira

They both work great.

And you need a good firewall, maybe try Panda Firewall+Antivirus 2007 I didnt use to like Panda but it seems to work ok now. And I think its free until february...

(Personally I dont like McAfee or Norton or Symantec at all)

Dont trust anybody that sais your computer is safe. Cuz its not.

About my Norton Antivirus Protection?

When I started to use the Live Update system to update he newest anti-virus system, it said that my spaces in the disk is not enough for running the system.

Can anybody tell me which disk he refers to??

My C disk has 17.8 GB left so I think it's definitely enough.

And how can I solve the problem??

About my Norton Antivirus Protection?abtuvurys 2005

I agree. I get McAfee free with my cable modem so I use it on my main desktop. AVG is highly recommended, but I am not familiar with it. On an older computer w/ limited memory (128k) and a Pentium II processor, I use Avast free home edition. It works well and is also free and constantly updated.

About my Norton Antivirus Protection?antivirus programs

You can slolve your problem by uninstalling Norton it's slowing your computer down anyway plus it's over rated.

Down load AVG it's free and its better than Norton because Norton is known for causeing problems..

C disc is what Norton was refering to
You might have to go to the norton web site and run the support tool, something may have screwed up norton. I had a problem with it with our family desktop. I finally uninstalled norton and switched to AVG, it's free and works a whole lot better.
Had the same issue...Just uninstall and reinstall the VS. Make sure you don't have a partition in Hard Drive which is causing this. Good Luck...
Uninstall Norton then go to http://free.grisosft.com and download AVG Free. Much more stable than what you're using now!
Go to control panel, un-install-re-install and run a fix, Norton is having a problem reading your drive. And ... for those that say AVG is better then Norton know little about systems and have little money to buy software. These are the same who think a restore is a fix. Norton and Panda are the best, period. The problem with advice is everyone has it but little to offer.

How can I tell whether the Windows Firewall is running?

I removed Norton Internet Security after the subscription expired. I enabled Windows Firewall from the control panel. However there is no indication that Windows Fire wall is running. Thre are no message or dialog boxes or icons in the task bar notification area indicating that Windows Firewall or Windows Security Center is running. There are icons in the notification area for Norton Protection center and Norton Anti-Virus. The Norton Protection Center Indicates: "Advanced Firewall Protection ... Not Available".

How can I tell whether the Windows Firewall is running?adware remover

simplest way is right click your network neighbhourhood properties and local areaconnection if you see a lock on it then you have firewalls otherwise no.

How can I tell whether the Windows Firewall is running?antivirus protection

Click start, control panel , windows firewall.

you can see from there if its running or not and if you fancy the challenge you can open and close ports and mess loads of things up!!

good luck!
Go to Start_Control Panel_Look for Windows Firewall_Click on it you will see if it is on or off. Some programs offer a firewall with them but if your computer is running one already, problems may arise from both firewalls being activated.
Go to Control Panel then there is an icon there "Windows Firewall"...

Open it and you can see its status either On or Off ( You can even set it)...
of coures there's no windows firewall indication running in the task bar becuase that's the way it is...okay to know wheter your windows firewall is running or not, go to start%26gt; all programs%26gt;accessories%26gt;system tools and then security centre..from there, you can check your firewall and your anti-virus system and whether it's running or not..

Is windows defender sufficient protection for my new laptop?

... or do I need anti-virus as well? I won't go on the internet until I know my laptop is secure.. thanks

Is windows defender sufficient protection for my new laptop?agv

NO!!!

You need a good anti-virus (not Norton or McAfee) program and prefferably anti-spyware and adware programs.

AVG free edition and ad-aware is a good combo.

Is windows defender sufficient protection for my new laptop?antivirus software

No! Get Norton Internet Security 2008 or a program like this. Plus i recommend CCleaner and Windows Care V2 Personal.
I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from the following linkhttp://www.computeractive.co.uk/. On the home page select downloads and then the appropriate category.I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps
Yes, Winodws Defender should be adequate protection, if it has the following:

Is this good enough protection for the computer?

I have

-Norton Internet Security 2007

-Spybot Search and Destory

-Ad-Adware SE

-Avast Anti Virus

is that good enough? need a fire wall anything? please tell me where to get it and stuff If I DO need it.

Is this good enough protection for the computer?anti virus protection

Norton Internet Security already has the antivirus scanner--you should uninstall Avast since it may came into conflict with Norton. You can also add A-Squared Free, SpywareBlaster and SuperAntiSpyware to your list. Norton also already has the software firewall, so you're OK there. If you also connect to the internet through a Router, you also already has a hardware firewall too. You're OK on security although if you can i would ditch Norton Security and use ZoneAlarm Security Suite instead, it's a much much better security suite. The suite has the top notch ZoneAlarm Pro firewall, Kaspersky antivirus along with ZoneLabs antispyware.

Is this good enough protection for the computer?antivirus

Norton Internet security gives you the full protection. No need to install those other craps.
looks like you have pretty well got things covered. If you are running windows you already have a firewall, just be sure it is turned on. you can check by going to control panel click on security and wala it will show you if firewall is on or off.hope this helps you

While it's great that those sites make a really great effort to stop any malware from getting to your computer, I believe it's best to implement antivirus protection at the PC also. It certainly can't hurt.

I recommend AVG Antivirus (Free version). I believe AVG provides a spyware software for free also. Check it out at http://www.grisoft.com

As stated above, Windows Defender isn't that good a product.

You have to check to really make sure that it is a true phishing dite. I have noticed that Microsoft gives false phishing dite error messages. When a site is linked to other site that requires users to put in their information to register to buy or use a product. Microsoft application tends to believe that it is a website pretending to be another website. What you need to do is to contact that website admin or support to alert them of the warning so they can report that to microsoft.

Get f-secure firewall and anti-virus. You can get a free trial for 3 weeks. The firewall will tell you about any program connecting to the internet that isn't usual. Like I stop it connecting media player on my desktop. I use the Windows firewall on my laptop - that stops some things coming in but not connections out. So MSN know all my playlists and what music I listen to. So a firewall will protect you against malware, viruses, worms, trojans, etc. the anti virus will scan all emails and everything else coming in for viruses and malware. You can schedule it to scan once a week and do a full system scan at a time when you aren't using the computer or even if you are using it! It does it better if you aren't using it. I also do an occasional scan with Ccleaner - that removes cookies, temporary files and other crap. F-secure also do an online scan - when a virus stopped my anti-virus program working - the online scan found it and deleted it. The program isn't the cheapest - it comes from Finland. If you happen to bank with Barclays give them a ring. I got a discount on the firewall and antivirus for my desktop and a licence for the antivirus for my laptop free for 2 years. I think that offer is still on for people who do online banking.

There is no such thing as best computer protection. The Anti-virus and spyware tools help you to protect but does not always guarantee 100% protection. To protect your computer:

- Do not install any freeware / application which are not tested.

- Do not visits sites that have intentions of installing unwanted tools

- Run Anti-virus scan atleast weekly using a updated tool.

go to www.kubuntu.com. There's a good protection tool. It's a bootable CD image that you'll need to burn to a CD, then you'll need to back your data up, boot from the CD, click on the install icon and follow the instructions in the wizard that appears. And that's it, after rebooting you'll have a very secure computer.

What is a botnet attack?

I'm asking this because Norton had sent me an email asking me to buy their new antibot real time protection system. And if you already have anti-virus and spyware protection, is this really necessary?

What is a botnet attack?antivirus software

A botnet (also known as a zombie army) is a number of Internet computers that, although their owners are unaware of it, have been set up to forward transmissions (including spam or viruses) to other computers on the Internet. Any such computer is referred to as a zombie - in effect, a computer "robot" or "bot" that serves the wishes of some master spam or virus originator. Most computers compromised in this way are home-based. According to a report from Russian-based Kapersky Labs, botnets -- not spam, viruses, or worms -- currently pose the biggest threat to the Internet. A report from Symantec came to a similar conclusion.

http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/sDe...

Botnet. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Botnet is a jargon term for a collection of software robots, or bots, which run autonomously. This can also refer to the network of computers using distributed computing software.

While the term "botnet" can be used to refer to any group of bots, such as IRC bots, the word is generally used to refer to a collection of compromised computers (called zombie computers) running programs, usually referred to as worms, Trojan horses, or backdoors, under a common command and control infrastructure. A botnet's originator (aka "bot herder") can control the group remotely, usually through a means such as IRC, and usually for nefarious purposes. Individual programs manifest as IRC "bots". Often the command and control takes place via an IRC server or a specific channel on a public IRC network. A bot typically runs hidden, and complies with the RFC 1459 (IRC) standard. Generally, the perpetrator of the botnet has compromised a series of systems using various tools (exploits, buffer overflows, as well as others; see also RPC). Newer bots can automatically scan their environment and propagate themselves using vulnerabilities and weak passwords. Generally, the more vulnerabilities a bot can scan and propagate through, the more valuable it becomes to a botnet controller community.

Unable to connect to www.heartofthelakes.co.uk website all others seem to work any ideas why please?

The inability to connect is using a wireless broadband connection. I am using windows XP Professional and IE 7. I have also tried firefox as my browser. There is anti virus and firewall protection on my computer but the strange thing is if I connect the computer using the dial up connection I can connect to the site without any problem ( I do not have an exstensive knowledge of computers but assume that the dial up connection would still run through the same protection software as when connected by wireless router) the isp for wireless is Orange and dial up Tiscali if that helps anyone identify a possible solution. Any help would be appreciated.

Unable to connect to www.heartofthelakes.co.uk website all others seem to work any ideas why please?antivirus

I've just tried the site (www.heartofthelakes.co.uk) with both Internet Explorer 6 and Firefox v1.5.0.7, and got through with both browsers. The only thing that readily springs to mind is that your firewall is, somehow, preventing access to the site. I'm not sure which firewall you are using, so it would be inappropriate for me to try to offer any remedy. I would, however, suggest you check your list of 'blacklisted sites' and remove the url if it is in there.

You may, of course, have an added problem in that your wireless router may also incorporate an inbuilt firewall. I'm afraid you'll have to check your manual about that one.

Best of luck in getting to your site.

First of all, never purchase security from your ISP. If you want a free anti-virus I recommend in order of popularity, but please choose the right one for you (install only one):

1. AVG Free

a. A simple interface (easier to use than Avast! and Avira)

b. Can detect about 82.82% of viruses

Cons: low virus detection

2. Avast!

a. Real-time protection

b. It has an option to delete a virus once found

c. Can detect about 87.46% of viruses.

Cons: Too many icons and confusing user interface

3. Avira AntiVir

a. It can detect malware better than Avast and AVG

b. It's cute umbrella icon

c. Can detect about 94.26% of viruses

If you want to be able to get the latest upgrades and virus protection for the software, yes. But the easiest thing to do would be to just pay for the upgrade of the same instead of buying something totally new. If you don't, your computer can be at risk for new viruses.
if you can or do use a torrent downloader, you can get the software, serials, cracks, and keygens with the program. and its free. i aint payin for none of that stuff. the prices they have for those programs is highway robbery, so i'd rather rob them.

Upgrade your memory by buying more memory for your PC its only like 100 bucks and it will speed your PC up.

Be careful with download.com make sure there isnt any adware or spyware with those free downloads. I would just buy it direct from McAfee.
The best protection is Zone Alarm. I use it on both my machines. Go to my website and click on the Zone Alarm ad to save $20.
There are also companies that make external devices to filter content BEFORE it reaches your computer. SonicWall in California is a great one, but might be a bit much if you're only on a home PC.
I think with the use of these two programs, you can have 99% protection on your PC.

Generally, you remove applications by using the Windows utility for the task, but Norton Antivirus tends to get in a bit deeper into the system, so it's tricker to remove it completely. Here's how you can do that:

Go to Start --%26gt; Control Panel --%26gt; Add/Remove Programs.

Scroll down to your Norton program

Click Change --%26gt; Remove All.

You will be asked to restart your PC. Do so.

Now go to Start --%26gt; My Computer --%26gt; Program Files. Right click on each Symantec folder and select Delete.

What do you think about XOFT spySE as a internet protection for my Laptop? does it make my computer

does it make my computer faster? does it run a fast scan? is it worth purchasing an anti virus when there are so many free ones out there?

What do you think about XOFT spySE as a internet protection for my Laptop? does it make my computer faster?computer

Xoftspy is scareware.

If you run its free scan it *will* find find lots of alleged malware on your machine, but 99% of what it finds are harmless cookies and *blatant* false positives.

There's nothing Xoftspy can do that you can't get for free.

Superantispyware and Spyware Doctor Starter Edition are both better antispyware and are free; and virtually any dedicated antivirus will be better than the antivirus qualities of Xoftspy. Avast and Avira are two of the best free antivirus available.

If I make Yahoo my homepage, does it come with internet protection for my PC?

I have recently went from Earthlink dial up to Verizon Wireless Broadband National Access. Something went screwy with my Norton Anti Virus, and I have to completely turn off Norton before I can get onto Internet Explorer. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it already, and it is doing the same thing. The Earthlink is still on my computer, and I have it as my homepage, but it doesn't offer the security I want. I wanted to know if Yahoo would put up all the safeguards I need, so I can get rid of Earthlink and Norton. This has been a week long process, please help! Thanks

NO

UK Only: Is the free AVG good enough for everyday computer protection ?

Not doing many downloads at all, just surfing.

Do I need Norton or other anti-virus software ?

What about firewalls ?

Should I only run one application to avoid conflicts ?

UK Only: Is the free AVG good enough for everyday computer protection ?download

AVG is a very good quality antivirus software. And yes, it should be run alone as your only antivirus, as having more than one will cause system conflicts.

I don't think AVG has a firewall built in, but there's always something like Comodo Firewall, which is also free. Antivirus and Firewall should be run together for solid protection in real time.

Norton is not necessary when you have those two, and i'd avoid it like the plague. it's expensive, unecessary, and bloated and will slow your system down considerably.

I don't see why you limit to asking only UK people, this is a very general question.

UK Only: Is the free AVG good enough for everyday computer protection ?hijackthis

They can all be downloaded from http://www.download.com/ I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps
i don't think so... AVG is very lame, Go for Kapersky but if you don't want to spend a penny... then Avira AntiVir PE Classic will do, it's better than AVG, try using it with Online Armor(firewall) also and have a back up spyware scanner (i.e. Spybot S%26D) just in case... one more thing, use only 1 antivirus program at a time, running more than 1 can create havoc to your pc

IE7 Toolbar add-ons not locking in.?

I can't get Google Web Accelerator, McAfee Site Advisor, Norton anti-virus and Norton Protection Center toolbar icons to stay locked into place. I format them into position on the toolbar area. I lock them into place. Then when I close up the window and bring up a new window, they are all out of place taking up sometimes one icon per row. I know these item are considered toolbars. But I never had any problems with IE6 or Fiirefox! Does anyone know how to lock these item into place?

i have no idea how to fix it, but you could switch back to IE6 or firefox.

Try re-downloading any anti virus or spyware software.

Also , try a google search for hi-jackthis.

It seems like one of those "fake anti virus trojans".

Do any scans and deletions in safe mode , just so you can kill it with ease.

you should install it advanced uninstaller PRO i'll tell you where you can download it. my email is jan9802002@yahoo.com because that site is very very private. ill wait for your email. then after i received your email, i'll reply the website to you
Restart in safe mode and try to delete the program. From http://fixit.in
Yep sounds like a rogue spyware program. Try using SuperAntiSpyware

http://www.superantispyware.com/

Load in normal mode but run in Safe Mode. This will take care of this infection for you.

I also recommend Spyware Doctor Starter Edition, which is free and available at www.download.com.

This probably ISN'T the answer that YOU'RE LOOKING FOR but some friends recommended Zone Alarm and it was the worst utility I ever bought. Anyway, it was next to possible to completely delete and uninstall the correct %26 proper Windows XP method via Control Panel and in the end I had No Other Choice when I finally sold this Notebook PC but reinstalling Windows XP Pro and downloading all updates incl SP 2 which was time consuming, but the speed and everything else came back and the Buyer was extremely happy!

By the way, if you don't own a external hard drive with USB connections, I would strongly recommend you borrowing one to copy all important files from your hard disk prior to reinstalling Windows XP.

Hope the Above Info Helps!

Does this sound like a good computer?

There's a computer I'm interested in buying from the local classifieds where I live thats listed as a CUSTOM GAMING COMPUTER for $300. I've always wanted a gaming PC but couldn't afford $1000+ that I see them going for. I've got $300 exactly but I don't know much about gaming PCs and would just like to know if this is worth buying or not.

The listing reads:

SOYO KT600 Motherboard

512 MBytes RAM

ATI RADEON 9800 PRO 128mb Video Card

AMD 3200+ Athlon XP Processor

SONY DVD RW DRU-530A

SONY CD-ROM Drive

Creative Labs Audigy LS Series 7.1 24bit Sound Card

150 G SATA HD

Microsoft Windows XP Pro (Activated Clean Install) w/ Service Pack 2

Microsoft Plus Digital Media Edition

Microsoft Office 2003

PowerDvd

DvdDecrypter

Nero Ultra Edition

WarCraft III

Complete With Anti Virus and Spyware protection

I just want a fast computer I can play games on. Should I get this computer and is it worth $300? Any advice or info, please?

Does this sound like a good computer?free antivirus download

Everything sounds good except for the memory, the graphics card and the CD and DVD drives. You should consider 1GB or more of RAM. The graphics card should be a bit better. I would wait for Vista (jan 30 2007) if I were you. The CD/DVD drives should be able to burn DVD or CD -Rs: they're cheaper and play in more places. It's way worth $300. For more info on Vista, visit http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/ex...

I don't know why the others answerers said such things. Your computer is infected and can be cleaned up.

I suggest 2 programs. Spybot and SuperAntiSpyware. These programs will be most effective if you run them in Safe Mode. On many computer you can get there by repeatedly pressing the F8 key as soon as your computer starts to boot. Then use your arrow keys to select Safe Mode.

A sad situation. Can you help me understand?

Thanks to all for answering.

Last week someone in my home used my computer to participate on Yahoo! game site ( Dominos).

This person is my nephew. Anyway, I pay my online bills with my credit card every now and then. I assume my computer is fully protected, including personal firewall, Anti Virus and spyware protection.

My little Nephew, 15 years old, had issues with Members in the Yahoo! game room. I didn't know this until the nightmare occured. My credit card was stolen and used. I had to close my credit card down. The following day my other credit card was used, which I immediately closed it down.

My Nephew said someone in the Yahoo! game room threatened to trace his IP address to give him a prosonal visit.

He said he never gave anyone his home address, or sign up for anything online; he simply plays games on the Yahoo! game site.

Couple nights ago someone knocked on my house door. The person looked strange, so I called the cops. etc

A sad situation. Can you help me understand?free spyware remover

I dont think this is a game room deal. Go google IP tacers and trace your ip and you will see it does not give a direct adress. Something fishy is going on here.

Mostly noobs, the naive, the computer illiterate, and children use AVG Free. These types love AVG because they say it is easy to use and almost never bothers them with any pop-ups or warnings. Of course AVG Free never bothers them, it hardly ever finds any virus to warn them about!

I was on Photbucket and I saw a popup from another website stating my computer was infected, I forgot the URL but it only appeared once and it didn't look like ti was from my system's anti spy ware/virus protection system.

I got a little shaken so I decided to do a scan right now. Is this just a random pop-up?

First of all, download firefox

www.getfirefox.com

second, download adaware and Spy bot search and destroy.

They are just trying to get you to download their software. Be careful, downloading this software may cause you more problems.
If it only came up once then yes its most likely a random popup to try and trick you. if it appears again then its spyware....If you have spyware then email me.

How do I connect all of my external hard drive/flash drive?

Someone gave me these instructions to try and fix a problem on my computer, but my question is, how do I connect all of my external hard drive/flash drive?

Here's the steps the person gave me.

Please download Combofix:

And save to the desktop.

Close all other browser windows.

Please connect your all your external hard drive/flash drive before running Combofix

Important-%26gt; Temporarily disable your anti-virus, real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with combofix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".

Double-click on the combofix icon found on your desktop.

Please note, that once you start combofix you should not click anywhere on the combofix window as it can cause the program to stall. In fact, when combofix is running, do not touch your computer at all and just take a break as it may take a while for it to complete.

Unknown processes on startup, how to kill?

I've got a windows XP machine, and when it starts up there are 29 processes running. I know thats way to many, so when I open up the task manager, the unwanted ones are:

CCSETMGR.EXE

(appers twice)

VetMsg.exe

iSafe.exe

CDProxyServ.exe

$sys$DRMServer.exe

I have no idea where these are coming from, nothing in the installed programs looks horrably suspicious. And all 'start up' items from 'run %26gt; msconfig' are disabled, minus my anti-virus and spyware protection program.

The programs I currently use are:

Avira http://www.free-av.com

Spybot S%26D http://www.safer-networking.org

I've ha dno luck finding what the above programs are, and the tools I'm using now don't seem to see anything wrong with them. The PC does seem slow... oh well, any advice would be great.

Unknown processes on startup, how to kill?house call

In this program you can see all the startup programs and kill the ones you dont want, I use this tool and its very good,

Here is a very good tool called Winpatrol and it monitors your computer for programs that try to run on your system without your knowlege, This tool also allows you to manage all the startup programs on your computer,, It also warns you if a program tries to run without your permission, I use this software and I recommend it,

Computer OS lifespan experiment?

yea.. i had a computer without internet that lasted for years.. lol.. but seriously, we had a computer with very little anivirus, really not any, and it lasted about two years, until it was too slow to use and had a ton of pop-ups even with the internet long. this was microsoft, so i have no idea how long a mac would last...

Computer OS lifespan experiment?microsoft office

I've never done it, cause i don't want that kind of aggravation, but i recently spent days cleaning up a new PC, that the user, when they bought it, only had a 90 day trial for anti-virus and all that.

They called me like 2 weeks after it, the trial, ran out, they could do nothing with it. It was so full of crap and junk it was PITIFUL.
I had WinXP Pro it last max 3 month, but i think Windows media center is longlasting it is now 8 month with no major problem %26#123;Including Internet connection%26#125;.
Give up using Windows, and install Linux on your computer. Linux is immune to all viruses, malware, spyware and adware.

Linux is a complete operating system that is either free or very cheap ($10-$30) and comes bundled with a huge variety of free software.

The Linux desktop is amazingly flexible and customizable, and anyone who is used to Windows will soon feel comfortable with it - and shocked by how dull their old Windows system looks by comparison! For example, in Linux you can use up to twenty (yes twenty) separate desktop work spaces - Windows only gives you one.

Go to www.distrowatch.com to find out how to get all the popular flavors of Linux...

...then do an image search for Linux screen grabs on Google.
